Расточительное изобилие форм и деталей, отличавшее “украшенный” стиль, в конце концов породило противоположную тенденцию. Реакция эта началась на западе Англии, при реконструкции монастырской церкви аббатства в Глостере в 30-е годы 14 века, т. е. в период, когда еще не завершилось строительство некоторых выдающихся образцов “украшенного” стиля. Зародился новый стиль, основанный на прямоугольных пересечениях горизонтальных и вертикальных линий, - “перпендикулярный” стиль. Основной мотив декора - “панель”, узкий, вытянутый прямоугольник ажурного кружева, увенчанный маленькой аркой с остроконечным навершием. Такие панели покрывают все стены, арочные проемы и окна в Глостере, образуя геометрически правильную решетку. Подобная упорядоченность резко противостоит той буйной игре воображения, которая отличала “украшенную” готику. Внутри этой “сетки” отдельные структурные компоненты формируют четкую и стройную систему; выделенные вертикальные элементы делят стены на единообразные пролеты. На первый взгляд такое стереотипное повторение прямоугольных панелей было довольно рискованным, так как могло привести к утомительной монотонности; однако зодчие, работавшие в новом стиле, оказались не менее искусны в структурировании пространства, чем их предшественники. Ведь именно благодаря этим панелям появилась возможность доводить окна, поверхность которых состояла исключительно из стекла, до столь гигантских размеров, как в Глостере. Так сбылась старинная мечта основателей готического стиля: создать интерьер, полностью залитый ярким солнечным светом.
Часовня Королевского колледжа представляет собой часть университетского колледжа, основанного Генрихом 6 в Кембридже в 1441 году. После смерти короля в 1471 году работы продвигались медленно. И лишь после того как в 1508 году Генрих 7 вновь обратил внимание на этот проект и выделил в завещании средства на строительные работы, в 1515 году часовня наконец была завершена.
Эта часовня – поистине идеальное воплощение “перпендикулярного” стиля. Стены здесь практически исчезли, трансформировавшись в стеклянные поверхности. Только в нижней части сохранилась сплошная стена, но и она покрыта ажурной решеткой. Узкие секции нижней части стены задают общую вертикальную устремленность интерьера, увлекая взор посетителя вверх, к самым сводам. Своды этой часовни, сооруженной на последнем этапе строительства колледжа, в начале 16 века, по праву считаются вершиной развития средневековой системы перекрытий. Здесь на огромном пространстве протяженностью в 12,66 м использована встречающаяся только в Англии уникальная техника перекрытия – веерный свод. Эта форма свода была разработана и воплощена уже около 1360 – 1370 годов в клуатре собора Глостера, но ранее ее использовали лишь в небольших по размерам строениях. Веер формировался благодаря тому, что тьерсеронный свод с его пальмообразным узором нервюр объединялся с панелями, типичными для “перпендикулярного” стиля. В базовом виде веерные своды представляют собой ряды усеченных конусов, расположенных вверх основаниями; эти воронкообразные поверхности соприкасаются между собой на продольном ребре сводов и опираются на поперечные арки. Конусы отделаны ажурными панелями, которые становятся все более узкими по мере удаления от вершины свода. Вертикальные линии таких сводов напоминают лучи “окна-розы”. В результате образуется весьма сложная, но тем не менее четко структурированная форма. Ажурные украшения и панели, прежде охватывавшие только стены и окна, теперь распространились и на свод. В часовне Королевского колледжа мастера поздней английской готики создали абсолютно единообразное архитектурное пространство, не имеющее себе равных во всей Европе.
С готикой связан расцвет английской книжной миниатюры, резьбы по алебастру и дереву и вышивки.
