Архитектурные формы Месопотамского искусства
Теперь обратим свое внимание на другую весьма существенную особенность города (при этом не имеет значения, строился ли он по плану или вырос стихийно), а именно на расположение улиц, внутренние коммуникации. Улицы соединяли различные центры города с воротами и обеспечивали доступ к жилищам обитателей. Минойские города Крита и построенные по образцу римского военного лагеря города резко отличались друг от друга по расположению улиц. Для минойского города были характерны (кроме отсутствия стен) беспорядочное расположение домов, лепящихся друг к другу, и причудливо извивающиеся улочки с постоянно меняющейся шириной. На наш взгляд, подобные города росли, как разрастаются клетки, стихийно, без учета будущих потребностей и последствий такого роста. Хотя перед дворцами, представлявшими собой сложные лабиринты, имелось открытое пространство прямоугольной формы, они, по-видимому, не связывались с коммуникационными артериями города. Прямой противоположностью критским городам была строгая симметрия города, построенного по образцу римского лагеря, где две основные дороги пересекались под прямым углом в административном центре и главные улицы вели к четырем воротам, расположенным по двое на общей оси. Сеть улиц разбивалась без учета направления движения, создаваемого естественным потоком транспорта; при этом не ставилось и цели распределить загрузку улиц. Созданная таким образом, сеть, которую к тому же отличало полное пренебрежение к рельефу местности в пределах города, оказывалась в известной мере бессмысленной. Вокруг шла мощная, по неровная линия каменных укреплений; однако ни стены, ни ворота также не были связаны с расположением улиц.
Судя по этому материалу, при строительстве улиц стремились к тому, чтобы их ширина была всюду одинаковой, а перекрестки прямоугольными. То там, то здесь улицы неожиданно делают поворот, но, возможно, первоначально здесь шли дороги, которые когда-то петляли, проходя по неиспользованным землям, разрушенным участкам, иногда даже по полям и садам. Такие пустыри часто возникали в больших городах, так как вследствие колебании численности населения жилые кварталы на протяжении веков меняли свое положение, занимая то большую, то меньшую площадь.
Сходная тенденция как-то упорядочить сеть улиц заметна и в больших городах, раскопанных в долине Инда, в Мохенджо-Даро и Хараппе. Там, однако, ширина улиц была более дифференцирована. Нельзя не учитывать, что использование в Месопотамии и в долине Инда кирпича при строительстве, естественно, вело к появлению прямоугольных зданий, в то время как, применяя такие строительные материалы, как ил и обломки кирпича и камня, лишь с трудом можно получить прямые углы.
Серьезным аргументом в пользу существования системы перекрещивающихся улиц служат данные раскопок в Урарту, в районе озера Ван. Там был обнаружен город, построенный по плану. Хотя раскопки еще не закончены, уже ясно, что город имел квадратную планировку; каждая улица была шириной в пять метров, за исключением главной (ее ширина - семь метров). Каменные стены слишком низки, чтобы можно было обнаружить следы ворот. Все дома строились одновременно и имели стандартные размеры; стены возвышаются сейчас только на один ряд кладки, и не было пока найдено никаких обломков посуды. Строительство города явно было приостановлено па начальной стадии. Этот город, по-видимому более древний, чем Дур-Шаррукин, показывает, как строились города подобного рода в Месопотамии, хотя, впрочем, нельзя быть полностью уверенным, что урартские цари в этом случае подражали ассирийцам.
Вопрос о системе городских улиц заставляет нас вновь обратиться к ''священной дороге'', поскольку она тоже проходила в пределах городских стен. Остатки такой дороги для торжественных процессий были раскопаны в Вавилоне, Ашшуре и Хаттусасе. Из литературных источников нам известно, что она существовала и в Уруке. В хеттской столице эта дорога соединяла храм, дворец и расположенное вне города святилище, но в самой Месопотамии ее строили для шествия, совершавшегося в Новый год от главного храма города к специальному святилищу, находившемуся за его пределами. ''Священная дорога'' была тщательно вымощена, а в Вавилоне украшена к тому же великолепными сооружениями по всему пути до знаменитых Ворот богини Иштар, через которые она проходила. Нельзя не заметить, что все оформление ''священной дороги'', несмотря на его роскошную монументальность, свидетельствует об удивительном отсутствии интереса к перспективе.
